Syria’s Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud says Washington’s military strike against the Arab country aims to “support and protect” the Israeli regime in the region.
By attacking Syria, the US and the West seek to target the anti-Israeli resistance front in the region which comprises Syria, Iran and Hezbollah, said the envoy in a Thursday meeting in Tehran with representatives of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA). The Syrian government and nation will defend their country by standing up to foreign plots and will emerge victorious, he added. He emphasized that Syria is not alone in countering the ongoing crisis and noted that certain countries in the region and across the world as well as the resistance front will support Damascus against any military attack. Washington seeks to kill the Syrian people and wreak havoc on the country just as it has left behind a trail of death and destruction in Iraq and other US-occupied countries, Mahmoud pointed out. He added that the US has breached the UN Charter and other international regulations. The Syrian people and government will stand up to the West and the US and believe that they will finally achieve victory, Mahmoud said. Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria. The call for military action against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21. Damascus has vehemently denied the accusations, saying the chemical attack was carried out by the militants themselves as a false-flag operation. On August 31, US President Barack Obama said he had decided that Washington must take military action against the Syrian government, which would mean a unilateral military strike without a UN mandate. Obama said despite having made up his mind, he will take the case to the US Congress. But he added that he is prepared to order military action against the Syrian government at any time.
