An anti - coup alliance in Egypt has called on people to hold million - strong “People Protect Revolution” demonstrations across the North African country.
“O great people of Egypt… Rage, gather and participate positively to protect your Revolution from defeat or deviation,” Egypt’s Anti-Coup Pro-Legitimacy National Alliance said in a statement on Thursday. “You have taught the world, with your daily persistent and peaceful protests and activities, the meaning of perseverance and steadfastness,” it said. “You have turned out by the millions for more than sixty continuous days, filling all the streets and squares of our beloved Egypt in support of your glorious January 25th Revolution,” it added referring to the 2011 revolution that toppled former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak. It also expressed anger over the wave of hatred and enmity propagated by supporters of the July 3 military coup d’état in Egypt which toppled the first democratically elected Egyptian head of state Mohamed Morsi and led to deaths of hundreds of people. The statement called on Egyptians to continue their “daily demonstrations and peaceful protest activities …for the return of legitimacy, to safeguard the gains of January 25 Revolution.” “We must do this tirelessly and persistently until the coup is defeated,” the statement said. The army-appointed government has launched a bloody crackdown on Morsi supporters ever since his ouster and arrested more than 2,000 Muslim Brotherhood members. About 1,000 people were killed in a week of clashes between Morsi supporters and security forces after police dispersed their protest camps in a fatal crackdown on August 14. The massacre sparked international condemnation and prompted world bodies to call for an independent investigation into the violence.
