A political commentator says the plan to launch a military attack against Syria is another ploy by the US and Israel to prevent Russia’s further involvement in the Middle East.
“Anybody who has studied the history of the region particularly for the last 50 years knows that there is this great contest that took place between the West and Russia over Russia’s participation in events in that region, ” said Mark Glenn, author and journalist. On August 21, the Takfiri militants operating inside Syria and the foreign - backed Syrian opposition claimed that the government forces had used chemical weapons in an attack against militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus, killing hundreds of people. The Syrian government has categorically rejected the claim as part of a false flag operation. Washington used the pretext to step up its war rhetoric against Syria. US President Barack Obama has said he is decided on attacking Syria and now seeks an approval for the move from the Congress, which will debate the issue when federal lawmakers return from recess on September 9. Referring to the US invasion of Iraq, Glenn described Washington’s threat against Syria as “part of this long term project of making sure that the Russians do not come back to the region. ”
The political commentator, however, added that Russia has different plans as Moscow intends to “protect her own interests in the region. ”
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million of others displaced due to the violence.
