A senior Iranian military official says Iran and Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah, support the restoration of peace and stability to the violence - stricken Syria.
“Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah are among the political and international supporters of Syria and advocate the restoration of stability, peace and security to the Syrian nation, ” said Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi on Wednesday. Rahim Safavi, who is also a senior military advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, further described the ongoing conflict in Syria as a “proxy war” waged by the United States and Israel through Arab countries and Turkey.
The official went on to say, “Some Arab and even European countries have recruited these mercenaries. They are also given good salary, training, arms and equipment, which are provided by these Arab states. ”
However, the government of Bashar al-Assad and Syria’s “resilient” army have gained the upper hand in the three-year fight against foreign-backed Takfiri militants, recapturing most of the militant-controlled parts of the country, Rahim-Safavi stated. In recent months, Hezbollah resistance fighters have been fighting alongside Syrian troops against the extremist Takfiri militants in Syria, defeating them in different areas, including in the strategic town of Qusayr which was recaptured by the Syrian army on June 5. Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since the outbreak of the violence. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
