A huge car bomb blast has rocked the Shia neighborhood of Zahiyeh in the south of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
At least 21 people were killed and 200 injured in the massive explosion which hit an area between Bir el-Abed and Roueiss neighborhoods on Thursday. The area is a stronghold of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah. Reports say many people were trapped in their homes as several buildings were seriously damaged in the bombing. A group calling itself the Brigades of Aisha has claimed responsibility for the attack. The bombing occurred only one day after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah claimed responsibility for a defensive action in which several Israeli soldiers were wounded upon entering Lebanese territory.
