Saad Hariri’s political party has called on the former Lebanese prime minister to return to his country.
The March 14th aligned Future Movement issued a statement on Thursday, saying, “We confirm our support for Prime Minister Saad Hariri and for all the decisions he makes under any circumstances.”
The statement was read by another former Lebanese Prime Minister, Fouad Sinoria, in a meeting for the Future Movement.
“The return of Prime Minister Saad Hariri is necessary in order to restore the internal and external balance of Lebanon with full respect to Lebanese legitimacy,” Sinoria added.
On Saturday, Hariri surprised the world by announcing his resignation in a televised program broadcast from Saudi Arabia.
While announcing resignation, the anxious-looking premier accused Iran of sowing “fear and destruction” in several countries, including Lebanon.
Iranian officials were quick to respond to the allegations, saying he has been bullied by Saudi authorities to resign.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun has voiced concerns over the situation of Saad Hariri, who is said to be held in Saudi Arabia after he resigned.
In a meeting with foreign ambassadors and representatives of the UN, the EU and Arab League in Lebanon, Aoun called for clarifications of the situation.
He also told Saudi Charge d’Affaires Walid al-Bukhari that Hariri must return home, describing the situation as unacceptable.
