Law enforcement agencies reported Monday anti-Muslim hate crimes across California have gone up from 18 percent in 2014 to 40 percent in 2015.
The report also shows that anti-Latino hate crimes went from 60 in 2016 to 81 in 2015.
In 2016, hate crimes against people based on their religion have increased compared to previous years.
The agencies also reported an 11.2 percent spike in total hate crimes across California. According to state Justice Department officials, this is the second year in a row the state saw double-digit increases.
Civil rights groups say U.S. President Donald Trump’s candidacy and his inflammatory rhetoric about Muslims and immigrants could be behind the increase.
However, Justice Department officials did not comment on the possible cause of the increase.
During his campaign trail, then-candidate Donald Trump said he would ban entry from Muslim countries. Since assuming office, he has done everything in his power to deliver what he had promised.
During Barack Obama’s tenure, Trump repeatedly stated that Obama is a “secret Muslim”, insinuating that there’s something wrong with being a Muslim.
Another cause of the increase might be the widespread media attention that Muslim-related terrorist attacks receive in the United States.
According to an academic study, terrorists attacks carried out by self-described Muslims receive more than five times as much media coverage as those carried out by non-Muslims in the country.
