The body of a 17-year-old Muslim girl who was reported missing earlier Sunday after leaving a mosque with her friends has been found by the police in Fairfax, Virginia.
Shortly after the police found the teenager’s body, officers arrested 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres, charging him with murder in connection with the case.
The girl was then identified by mosque officials as Nabra – her last name was not given. They said she and her friends were coming back from eating during a break from Ramadan prayers when a man with a baseball bat came out of a car and attacked the group of girls.
According to police and witnesses, all of the girls except for one fled the scene.
“They all dispersed after the incident and when they met back up they realized she was missing,” said Deputy Aleksandra Kowalski, a spokesperson for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s office.
“We are devastated and heartbroken as our community undergoes and processes this traumatic event. It is a time for us to come together to pray and care for our youth,” the center's statement said.
Muslims throughout the world are in the final days of celebrating Ramadan, a holy month in which worshippers pray throughout the day and fast from sunrise to sunset.
