An Iranian commander has hit back at U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, calling the American official’s recent comments “stupid”.
Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri said on Sunday that Tillerson’s expectations from Iran’s president shows American officials’ ignorance of the politics of the Islamic Republic/
“Accelerating our defensive capabilities, including our missile systems, is among the top priorities of the Islamic Republic,” Jazayeri said.
It came after Tillerson called on Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to put an end to Iran’s ballistic missile tests in what is Washington’s first reaction to the Iranian president’s re-election.
“What I would hope, is that Rouhani... use that (new) term to begin a process of dismantling Iran's network of terrorism, dismantling its financing of the terrorist network, dismantling the manning and the logistics and everything that they provide to these destabilizing forces that exist in this region,” the U.S. Secretary of State said during a joint news conference with his Saudi counterpart on Saturday.
He also expressed hopes that Rouhani puts an end to Tehran’s ballistic missile tests.
During Tillerson’s visit to Saudi Arabia, the two countries signed an arms deal worth $110 billion, under which the U.S. will supply weapons to Saudi Arabia.
Jazayeri also said that the only chance of reaching peace and stability in the Middle East is if the Americans exit the region and stop supporting destabilizing Middle Eastern countries.
