Israeli paramilitary police officers have killed a Palestinian girl at Bab al-Amud Gate (Damascus Gate) of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Israeli police spokeswoman said the teenage girl was carrying a knife and tried to attack the forces.
Luba Samri said a knife was recovered from the scene as well as a farewell letter from the teenager that was written to her family quoting a verse from the Koran that signed off with the word “shahida” - Arabic for martyr.
Eyewitnesses, however, said that following the incident an Israeli man wearing a cap brought a knife and planted it next to the little girl.
They said the Israeli forces opened fire at the little girl. The girl was then shot in her stomach, fell on the ground and remained bleeding for a while, according to the eyewitnesses.
A few minutes later, an elderly Palestinian man who tried to approach the girl, by was beaten and arrested the Israeli forces.
The girl was identified by the Palestinian medical sources as Fatima Hjeiji, 16, who was from the West Bank city of Ramallah.
More than 243 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli forces since October 2015 in occupied territories.
