Iran’s defense minister has said that if Saudi Arabia does anything stupid against the Islamic Republic, the Iranian army will hit back and destroy all of the kingdom, except for the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

In an interview broadcast on Arabic-language Al-Manar TV on Sunday, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said, “we warn them against doing anything stupid, but if they do so, we will leave nowhere untouched apart from Mecca and Medina.”

Dehqan made the comments in response to remarks made by Saudi deputy crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who said any battle between Riyadh and Tehran would take place on Iranian soil.

“We will work to have the battle in Iran rather than in Saudi Arabia,” Prince Mohammed had said, referring to the Saudi Arabia’s war against Yemen, during which more than 12,000 Yemeni civilians have been killed and many more displaced.

“We know that we are a main goal for the Iranian regime,” he said. “We will not wait until the battle becomes in Saudi Arabia but we will work to have the battle in Iran rather than in Saudi Arabia.”

Also on Wednesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said Prince Mohammed’s remarks prove that the kingdom follows “confrontational and destructive policies” in the Middle East and towards Tehran.
