When around 1,500 Palestinian prisoners in an Israeli prison went on a hunger strike to call for better conditions, national union activists went out of their to make it even harder for them.

The far-right wing activists organised a barbecue party and started grilling a variety of meats next to the prison walls.

According to Jerusalem Post, the youth branch and secretary-general of the far-right party, Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel and MK Bezalel Smotrich, said that their goal is to “celebrate the hunger strike” and “break the spirit” of the strikers, in hopes that the smell of the meat would waft into the prison.

The group, who wants the government not to give into the demands of the prisoners, said that the prisoners “will enjoy breathing in the smoke and suffer from the smell of the meat, and [we will] show them that we will not give in to their whims”

“Surrender to a hunger strike?... Anyway, it’s not clear why there’s no death penalty for terrorists. We wish these terrorists luck in their hunger strike. They should take it all the way,” National Union Youth chairman Avihai Greenwald said.

Demanding For Better Conditions

The prison’s poor conditions which were condemned by Amnesty International in a report last week led to the hunger strike.

“Prisoners’ family members told the group that they had not seen their relatives for many years and that their applications for visits were frequently rejected,” Russia Today (RT) reported.

The strike was started by Marwan Barghouti, a Fatah leader who is serving five life sentences plus forty years for his role in the murder and wounding of Israelis.

According to RT, the head of detainees' affairs for the Palestinian Authority, Issa Qaraqe, said that the inmates are currently refusing food, demanding for more visitation rights, the installation of public prison phones and an end to solitary confinement.
