Iraqi forces and their allies have made great achievements in their operation to take back the western part of the strategic northern city of Mosul from ISIS militants.

Soldiers from the 9th Armored Division were able to recapture Tal al-Rumman village on the western outskirts of Mosul, Arabic-language al-Sumaria television network quoted commander of Nineveh Liberation Operation Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Rasheed Yarallah as saying.

The Iraqi commander further said that the government forces managed to inflict heavy losses on ISIS ranks during the operation, before they hoisted the national flag over a cluster of buildings in the area.

In a press statement, commander of Federal Police Forces Lieutenant General Raed Shaker Jawdat also said that rapid response teams had raised the Iraqi flag over the Engineering College and Olympic Swimming Pool located in Mosul’s western neighborhood of Jawsaq.

ISIS took control of Mosul in 2014. The Iraqi government has launched a massive operation in late 2016 to retake the strategic city.

Backed by the counter-terrorism forces as well as federal police and Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, the Iraqi army has managed to retake areas from ISIS.

While the western Mosul has been targeted by airstrikes in the past, no major ground offensive was launched to retake the area from ISIS before the latest operation.
