Palestinian residents from low-lying districts of Gaza Strip have evacuated their homes due to heavy floods.

Gaza Strip has experienced severe flooding over the past few days. The floods have left some of the poorest people in the most vulnerable areas exposed to dire living conditions.

Local sources said the rain has overwhelmed the besieged city’s sewage system and forced more than eight families to evacuate from their makeshift homes in the northern Gaza Saftawi neighborhood.

According to Gaza’s civil defense spokesman Muhammad Al-Maydana, ten homes were flooded in the northern regions of Safrawi and had to be evacuated.

He added that nobody was injured.

Following the victory of Hamas in the democratic elections in 2006, world powers, including the EU, US and Israel showed public support for the new Fatah administration without Hamas.

Backed by the West, Israel also imposed a naval blockade of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip which ensured Mediterranean imports of goods into the Strip did not include any sort of weaponry.

The blockade has also restricted non-weapon trade, such as food supply.

Israeli offensives as well as the restrictions have since taken a heavy toll on Gaza’s infrastructure. Thousands of residents have been unable to rebuild their homes destroyed during Israel’s 2014 offensive.

The severe flooding has exacerbated the dire situation that Palestinians are facing.
