Millions of people have gathered in streets of Tehran to say goodbye to the former president of Iran who passed away two days ago.
Hashemi Rafsanjani, who was viewed as one of the pillars of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, was admitted to Shohada Hospital in Tehran on Sunday after a heart attack.
He passed away later in the day, aged 82.
President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and Judiciary Chief Sadeq Amoli Larijani, among many other senior officials attended the funeral procession.
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, led the funeral prayer for Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani in Tehran University on Tuesday morning.
Later in the day, the body of late Hashemi Rafsanjani was carried towards the mausoleum of the late Founder of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini and was buried inside the shrine.
Iran has announced three days of national mourning in honor of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani.
Hashemi Rafsanjani became Iran’s first Parliament Speaker after the victory of the Revolution.
Between 1989 and 1997 he served as the country’s president and following his tenure, he was chosen by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as the chairman of the Expediency Council, a position he kept until his departure.
