A British woman in Dubai has been arrested and charged with “extramarital sex” after she reported being gang raped.

The 25-year-old woman was visiting the United Arab Emirates when the alleged attack took place last month, reported a UK-based organization named “Detained in Dubai” which assists people who have become victims of injustice in the UAE.

After she reported being gang raped to local police, the woman was arrested for breaking the country’s law against extramarital sex.

If convicted, the woman faces years in prison or severe punishment, including stoning to death and flogging.

She was allegedly raped by two British men.

“If the facts bear it out, [the case] deserves the utmost concern,” said Detained in Dubai.

Radha Striling, founder and director of Detained in Dubai, said that the UAE has a long history of “penalizing rape victims”.

"Police regularly fail to differentiate between consensual intercourse and violent rape. Victims go to them expecting justice, and end up being prosecuted,” Stirling noted, adding that “they not only invalidate their victimization, they actually punish them for it."

The UK woman’s passport was confiscated by authorities before she was released on bail, while her attackers flew back to Birmingham, The Sun reported.
