A Member of Nineveh Provincial Council has announced that Iraqi security forces discovered one of the biggest prisons of ISIS terrorist group in al-Shura area, south of the province.

Hussam al-Din al-Abbar said in a press interview on Sunday that the security forces found an underground prison belonging to ISIS in al-Shura while they were removing explosives and securing the area.

Abbar further said that the prison contains over 1000 prisoners, including officers and members of Iraqi army and police who were detained by the terrorist group.

“The detainees were freed and transferred to a safe destination,” he added.

Abbar went on to say, “The ISIS tortured and arrested thousands of Nineveh residents and committed many crimes against the citizens who violated its instructions.”

This is while the joint security forces, backed by Army Aviation and international coalition are continuing their progress in the military operations to retake control of the city of Mosul from ISIS control.

The General Commander of the Armed Forces, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the beginning of the battle to liberate the city of Mosul in October 17.

Backed by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, the Iraqi forces have been able to push ISIS out of many areas surrounding Mosul.

The operation to retake Mosul still continues.
