WikiLeaks has revealed that the Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said in 2013 that Israel is not capable of causing substantial damage to Iran’s nuclear program.
According to the transcripts released by WikiLeaks on Saturday, Hillary Clinton delivered a speech in front of the finance company Goldman Sachs in 2013, discussing Israel’s military abilities against the Iranian nuclear program.
During her speech, the Democratic nominee said “the Israelis' estimate is even if we set their program back for just a couple of years, it's worth doing and whatever their reaction might be is absorbable. But they [the Israelis] couldn't do much damage themselves.”
“The Israelis, as you know, have looked at this very closely for a number of years,” Clinton added.
The former secretary of state went on to say, “Our policy is prevention, not containment. What that means is that they have to be prevented from getting a nuclear weapon.”
She has not yet commented on the latest leaks.
Clinton also told the firm’s CEO Lloyd Bankfein at a South Carolina conference that if Tehran raced toward making nuclear weapons, the US must “up the pain, without boots on the ground.”
The speech was delivered five months before an interim agreement was reached between Iran and six world powers, an agreement which paved the way for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
