The largest Muslim gathering in the United States will be held during this weekend in northeast of Rosemont.
Several guest speakers will address the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America, including Khizr and Ghazala Khan, who were brought under spotlight by criticizing Donald Trump during the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
The Khans, who have lost their son in Iraq, got into a heated exchange with the Republican nominee Donald Trump when Khizr Khan spoke out against Trump’s Muslim immigration comments.
After Khan’s speech at the DNC, Donald Trump numerously attacked both Khizr and Ghazala Khan for their attitude. Trump said that the Khizr Khan had delivered the entire speech at the DNC because his wife, Ghazala Khan, was not “allowed” to speak.
This will be the largest convention held in North America, with speakers, seminars and products catered to the Muslim community. The idea behind this gathering is to bring more understanding and tolerance of the Muslim faith.
"ISNA is one of the most inclusive Muslim organizations in America. We have 48 percent female speakers this year I am very happy to say. That is something that is unprecedented among American Muslim organizations, and God willing next year we will have an even greater percentage percentage," said Hazem Vata of the Islamic Society of North America.
The theme of this year’s gathering is “Navigating Challenges, Seizing Opportunities.”
Jeh Johnson, Homeland Security Secretary, will be speaking at the conference Saturday night.
