Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, has accused Washington of orchestrating the failed coup in Turkey.

He said if speculations over Washington’s role in the coup prove to be correct, America will be involved in another major scandal.

“In the recent events in Turkey, there is a strong speculation that the coup was orchestrated by the Americans' measures and preparations and if this is proved, it will be another big scandal for the US,” Ayatollah Khamenei said on Monday.

“Washington’s hostile plots and interference are not confined to Iran,” Ayatollah Khamenei said. “America is opposed to Islam and Islamic tendencies and that is why they staged a coup in Turkey, in which Islamic tendencies exist.”

“Of course this incident was smashed in Turkey and Washington is now hated in the eyes of the Turkish people,” he added. “Americans are being weakened in Iraq, Syria and other places as well.”

On July 15, a coup against Turkish President Recep Tayyib Erdogan took place by the armed forces, but the government was able to foil the coup as Erdogan urged Trukish people to take to streets to protest against the coup plotters.

There are speculations that the coup plotters were supported by US government.

Ayatollah Khamenei also referred to the United States as the party that either creates or escalates conflicts and wars in the region.

“We remind the governments in the region that Washington is not trustworthy and considers Arab governments as tools to preserve the Zionist regime (of Israel) and fulfill its arrogant policies,” he stressed.

He also spoke out against the overt relationship between the Saudi regime and Israel and described it as a “stab in the back of the Islamic community”, emphasizing that the US played a role in such betrayals.
