In an interview with Muslim Press, Zaid Jilani said the Saudis have received billions of dollars in arms sales from the United States.
“The United States has provided billions of dollars in arms sales for the Saudi government and has also provided forms of logistical support for the conflict in Yemen,” said Mr. Jilani, a journalist from Atlanta.
He also said that the Saudi regime has intervened in the internal affairs of the war-torn country.
“I think the Saudi government has intervened in the internal affairs of Yemen and that there has been evidence uncovered by human rights monitors that they are using cluster bombs in the conflict,” he said.
Jilani went on to say, “It may be that they are not targeting civilians but they have certainly at least been reckless in their use of force.”
Answering a question on the future of US-Saudi relations, he said it is hard to say at this point how their relations would change.
On October 27, during the 25th annual National Council of US-Arab Relations, Mr. Jilani asked the Saudi ambassador, “Will you continue to use cluster weapons in Yemen?”
In order to avoid answering the question, the Saudi ambassador to the United States, Prince Abdullah Al-Saud, told a questionable joke.
“This is like the question did you stop beating your wife?” Abdullah Al-Saud responds, before bursting into laughter.
Mr. Jilani repeated his question, asking, “Yes or no? Yes or no? Will you continue to use cluster weapons?”
“You are political operators! I’m not a politician,” the ambassador replied.
Saudi Arabia launched its deadly campaign against Yemen in March 2015. The kingdom has incessantly pounding Yemen since the beginning of the aggression.
About 10,000 Yemenis have been killed as a result of Saudi Arabia’s military aggression against Yemen.
