U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has said that the U.S. government has been quietly supporting allies and partners of al-Qaeda, ISIL and other terrorist groups in their fight against the Syrian government.

Gabbard, an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who has been the United States Representative for Hawaii's 2nd congressional district since 2013, told Muslim Press that the regime change war in Syria has caused great human suffering and tremendous loss of life.

She said under U.S. law it is illegal for any American to provide money or assistance to al-Qaeda, ISIS or other terrorist groups.

“If you or I gave money, weapons or support to al-Qaeda or ISIS, we would be thrown in jail,” she said.

“Yet the U.S. government has been violating this law for years, by quietly supporting allies and partners of al-Qaeda, ISIL, and other terrorist groups with money, weapons, and intelligence support, in their fight to overthrow the Syrian government.”

The congresswoman also said that the U.S. government has also been providing weapons and money to Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and others who provide direct and indirect support to groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda in places like Syria and Yemen. “This support has strengthened al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations.”

In January 2017, Gabbard made a secret “fact-finding” mission to Damascus and met with various civil society groups as well as Syrian officials, including President Bashar al-Assad.

“The fact that our resources are being used to strengthen the very terrorist groups we should be focused on defeating should alarm every American,” she said.

“The counterproductive regime change war in Syria, and our support for Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen, has caused great human suffering, created millions of refugees, caused tremendous loss of life, and has strengthened our enemies.”

She went on to call on the U.S. government to stop arming terrorist. “This madness must end,” she said.

“That’s why I introduced the Stop Arming Terrorists Act—legislation that would prohibit any Federal agency from using taxpayer dollars to provide weapons, cash, intelligence, or any support to al-Qaeda, ISIS and other terrorist groups, as well as prohibiting the government from providing weapons and money to other countries who are directly or indirectly supporting terrorists,” she added.
